From Peace- Sunrise of Life Manager- Tanzania

Greetings!

A month has come and gone, and in it, so much and so little to report. I could write about our daily activities, or doing outreach at the river in Arusha, or the street child at the station in Tembe whose eyes still haunt me today. But, since we've been silent for almost a month now, I’ll leave today as a post from our manager, Peace Mbise, explaining what Sunrise of Life is all about, and the processes we work with here in Tanzania.

She writes:

Sunrise of Life is committed to giving opportunity to children all over Arusha by pulling them out of the street life which makes life very hard and hopeless for them.

When we bring in kids the first time, it seems very hard and lonely in the outreach centre and because of the addictions they have they keep running backs to the streets. In time, they cope and find it a loving home.

We take kids from around the streets who are addicted to different things. We show them a loving and caring heart while counselling them with love about all that has happened to them back in the streets. With the display of a positive lifestyle and their basic needs, they feel safe in our care and after they have built trust and love with us, we also add on quality education and tutoring.

While in the drop in centre, the kids are taught different things. This includes different subjects to see what level they achieved in school, and also sometimes even to see if they can write and read. They are also taught personal hygiene and general cleanliness, as most of this is lacking in the street life.

The kids can stay at the drop in centre as long as necessary according the their addiction, but in general the maximum stay is 12-16 weeks. From here, they are moved to the residential centre, where they begin a normal family life, attending school and growing with the Sunrise of Life family.”

We’ll definitely try to be more active going forward, as there is plenty to write about. For now, we leave you with a huge thank-you for all your support in the past years. Sunrise of Life is now officially three years old here in Tanzania, and it’s incredible to see how much we have advanced in the last few years. All of it would not have been possible without you. Asante sana!
