The Happenings

Hello SOL Sponsors,

It is almost hard to believe how fast summer is going by. We are into our third week of July and summer vacations are in full swing with many people are traveling to their favorite summer destinations. Over the past month Sunrise of Life has been busy on many fronts as we work to get our new staff members and Drop-in Center operational.

SOL’s new Centre Manager, Peace, has been busy getting up to speed not only with managing budgets and new policy, but also with building relationships with each and every child in order for her to be an effective and respected asset at the Centre. Her skills will be invaluable as the children gear  up for their return to class for the 2nd half of the school year in early August. Most of the children completed their first semester at the end of June, and their grades are slowly coming in. We would like to give special notice to Kennedy, Emmanuel, and Derrick for all finishing with Very Good remarks on their grades. Children who did not have strong performance will be taking classes over their break, or be given additional tutoring options.

Over the past month SOL has accepted a new child to the residential centre. His name is Praise and he is 4 years old. He was recently abandoned by his Mother, his only parent, and left to fend for himself on the streets. We are working to find out more about his past, but he is healthy, and we plan for him to start preschool in January. Also, in this time Peace has hired an additional social worker to help with child needs both at the Residential Centre and at the new Drop in Centre, and we have volunteer nurse helping tend to any health issues the children may have. We are also excited that the staff has started a game and craft day as part of the Centre’s weekly routine. Every Tuesday children will alternate playing an organized sport against one another and working on various arts projects. This will be a great way for all children and staff at the Centre to have a set time to socialize and bond with each other.

As always, Thank You for your continued support of Sunrise of Life! If you have any questions or have interest in sponsoring a child, please contact Katie Nord at krnord@stkate.edu.

Asante Sana,

Sunrise of Life Team
