Shikamo (Hello)

Hey Everyone,

I have been home for several days now and thought I should update you on some things. I was very happy with how well things are going at the centre. While I was there a board meeting took place. Some things which were discussed at the meeting was projects that should happen at the center, such as building renovations, a new chicken-house, or addition to the current chicken house and new showers. The biggest and most expensive project will be building renovations as many of the buildings are in very poor condition. The board also discussed how Sunrise of Life should move forward in opening a drop-in centre in Arusha, as well as many other important and exciting topics. Overall the board meeting for the Tanzania side went very very well, and all went away with new energy. Thank-you to all the very dedicated board members.

Talking about building renovation we have some very very good news. The Rotary Club of Lethbridge East has recently sent us news that a matching grant of $4000.00 has come through, and funds have been received by the club. The Rotary Club of Lethbridge East put $2000.00 towards this matching grant which brings the total to $4000.00. All of us at Sunrise of Life were more than happy to learn this. These funds are to be used for improvements to the Garden Project, improvements to the chicken project (adding 100 chickens to the current project) and Kitchen, Classroom and Nurse Room renovations. All of you have seen pictures of the current state of the kitchen. Thankfully funds from the village tractor has allowed for the stove to be re-attached to the wall. The Rotary Funds will be used for fixing the cracking walls, replacing the current ceiling board and putting a fresh coat of paint on. Then shelves will be put in the store-room, and new security doors will be put on the store-room and kitchen. This will allow the food to be stored in the storeroom which is attached to the kitchen. We are very excited to get these new projects started. They will be started in phases (1) Garden (2) Chickens (25 chicks at a time) (3) Kitchen and Store-room and (4) Classroom and Nurses room. In the Classroom all the holes in the floor and the walls will be fixed and the walls will be painted. We have not decided if all the walls of the classroom will be painted or only the more severe parts as it would be a shame to erase all the nice paintings on the current class-room wall.

Finally the most rewarding part of my trip was to see how much happier and better behaved all the children were. Neema, the Centre Manger and Hilda, the Childcare worker, have been doing an amazing job in running the centre, and taking care of the children respectively. Also Kanie has been so amazing in making sure all the projects run more than smoothly, and everyone at Sunrise of Life is so thankful for his never ending help. Also Thank-you to Mamma Faye who holds the centre very close to her heart and is so amazing at helping and guiding.

Thats all for now, as I think of more things to update you on- I will be sure to do so :)

Regards

Everyone at Sunrise of Life- both in Canada and in Tanzania
