Mambo,
Hello Everyone,
These past weeks have been very busy, but now that the dinner has come and gone with great success we hope to post a couple of the newest happenings in Tanzania. Our four new children have settled in nicely at the centre, and they are enjoying their new family. At times it is hard for some of the children who have been there a long time to adapt to the new rules from the centre. Unfortunately in early April two of our children ran away from the centre and returned to the streets. Sometimes the pull to their former addictions is just so strong, and it becomes hard to resist. As well with the new positive structure at the centre some of the children are having a hard time adapting, thus some behaviour problems have been surfacing. Most likely these problems were there before but were being pushed under, and now that the structure at the centre has changed they are surfacing. We have been noticing over the past months although, that the children are adapting, and that because of this performance in school has been going up. A good example of the structure change is that we now have a fulltime child-care worker. Whereas before the children did not have anyone to correct their negative behaviours, now they have steady support, and correction. Mamma Vumi goes to the local schools on a weekly basis to see how the children are doing in school, and listen to the teachers recommendations. As well Mamma Vumi checks on the boarding students once a month.
In other news, the Rotary Club of Canmore has donated funds to pay for the staff salaries for one year and to build a cow shed for our two new cows (see below picture). This is very fortunate as soon these cows are going to calve, so it will be nice for them to have a good shelter for this. Thank-you again and again to the Rotary Club of Canmore for their support and the Sunrise of Life team is looking forward to working with Rotary in the future!!
Neema Macha, our centre manager is going to be traveling to the UK, a trip which is being given to her by her former sponsor. This sponsor supported Neema through school and university and because of Neema's exceptional success he is providing her a chance to widen her views of the world. While Neema is away for two weeks, Kanai is going to be managing the centre. Kanai works for US Aid at an organization near to Sunrise of Life in Tanzania and has dedicated his time to step in for Neema.
David Shaban, one of our older boys has decided he will go for Hotel Management. We were very excited to hear this as it was taking him quite a while to decide which vocation he wanted to go for. We are sure that David will do very well in this vocation, as there is employment in this field. As of now Sunrise of Life has two youth in Mechanic College, two are completing their last year of a Tourism Diploma and one (Hadji) has employment lined up for when he is finished, as well Aaron is looking into his options and is leaning towards Journalism. The only thing that is still holding him back is that there is not much employment in that field should he follow that rout. Finally there are two youth who are completing university preparation in Uganda, and are really enjoying it. Thank-you to all the sponsors for making this possible for these youth. At Sunrise of Life we realize the importace of helping these youth give themselves the skills so that they will gain permanent employment and be able to create sustainable lives for themselves.
Thank-you for creating opportunities for these children!!
God Bless
-Tom
